Stone Age Meets This Age
As many of you already know, I am pretty old-fashioned. I don’t have a palm pilot, I still haven’t figured out IM (but suspect that it would instantly erode any vestige of work ethic I have left), and I refuse to become slave to my cell phone, which I carry around purely for automotive and social emergencies. It is never, ever on. I just recently discovered how to check messages and how to “text”. And text-ing, I think, is a poor substitute for emailing or calling.
However, I am starting to covet two things.
1) A digital camera. If I had one, I could share photos of my colossal apartment (and other stuff) with all of you. I could also sell things online.
2) An iPod. I am starting to feel embarrassed about my discman and its accompanying geeky cheap headphones from Radio Shack. On the bus, I look around at everyone with their sleek, white mp3 players, and wonder if I should be wearing a loin cloth, carrying a club, and eating filleted boar for lunch. Those iPods are wicked cute and easy to transport. But … is the expense justified? I listen to music on my computer all day at work. I can plug into the radio and movies at the gym, where my discman suffices for the rare moments in which my attention wavers from Good Housekeeping and Glamour. Should I shell out $100 or so for one of those things? (They’re deeply discounted on Craigslist.)
Thoughts from my tech-minded readers? And you know who you are?

I have to say that I love, love, love my Ipod. I felt that the ability to listen to music while flying without lugging around a bunch of CDs was worth it. It goes running and walking with me. Plus w/ an adapter it is good for car trips when there is nothing on the radio. And, we saved a lot of money by using it at our wedding instead of hiring a DJ. And I have to say that I am not a super-techy person.
Go iPod.
I am not so good at packing for road trips, and picking out CDs to take with me usually took a good amount of time. Now I can just grab my iPod and be on my way faster.
I LOVE my ipod (when I saw another post from Julia, I thought it was me for a second. I really, truly love it. I am not tech minded at all. My ipod and tivo/dvr are two material things I have that I can not imagine how I lived without. Let me add, I am sooo not cool when I use mine because I hate the ear buds. My husband has bought me at least 3 different headsets to try, each less cool than the previous, but I DO NOT CARE, I love the music.
I say go for the digi camera. I want to see some pics on this damn blog!
Also, I heart my iPod. I can now play it in my car, and it's so freaking cool.
Well, if you feel like shopping around, you could go something other than iPod. I like the player, but I don't really love the interface, or the way iTunes colonized my computer. I probably would have bought something else entirely, except that some friends gave me a $100 Apple gift certificate specifically for an iPod.
Now, all that said, I do love the pod. CDs have started to feel so cumbersome and extraneous. It's a mindset thing, so I say embrace it or not according to thy will.
But definitely get a digital camera. You will never be sorry.
I don't have a 'pod since like you I'm always getting music from my computer. If the headphones are the thing, you can get some earbuds instead of the bigger headphones for like $5-10.... The digi-cam, though, I think is a good investment. I'd've thought that your environmentalist side would've pushed you there already! No wasted prints = much less chemical pollution....
Years ago, I bought a 15 gig Dell DJ for about half the price of the equivalent iPod. I've never had any problems with it, unlike my iPod-owning friends. Not sure if they still make them, but if they do, it's definitely worth checking out.
Being the Mac Daddy (or Daddy Mac) and Mr. Technology you know I'm going to recommend the iPod. I've used other players and they really just are harder to use in my opinion. I would suggest going to the Apple Store at the Cambridgeside Galleria and checking things out. And before you buy, I will be glad to help you find online deals that should be better than what you'll generally find in physical stores. I see you as probably being a an iPod nano person, but we'll see.
As for the digital camera, I guess I'd vote for that too. There is just something really wonderful about the convenience of digital. I actually just bought a camera because ours died after succumbing to seawater in SC, so I can give you some advice on that too. A really excellent site is http://www.dpreview.com/
